About
Nena Howell

Fine ARTS

Contemporary Alaska native artist

"Experience the transformative power of my art, inspired by ancestral rhythms and a
deep connection to nature.” Thank you (Gunalchéesh) Nena Howell

Artist Statement

Like my ancestral spirits beating on their drums, my work is born out of that feeling of celebration and rhythm.

I feel a complete wellness in that intertwined place with my brushes and oils. There is a fluidity in this creative space that enlivens and energizes your spirit. My work is an expression of movement, and ancestral energy that connects and provides wellness for all life.

I bring values of survival, connection, stewardship, respect, and gratitude forward on canvas. I witness pursuits and passions that enmesh intimate connections where figures meet nature. My contemporary figurative oil work has reverence for my Northwestern coastal Tlingit formline, Ukrainian roots, and abstract expressionism style.

I continue to find inspiration from artists such as Richard Schmid, Lee Krasner, Jeffrey T. Larson, Alice Neel, Preston Singletary and, of course, the works of my late grandfather, master Tlingit artist, Rudolph Walton from Sitka, AK. His works can be found in Alaska, Pacific Northwest, and Canadian museums.

Reverence for my elders, stewardship for all people, land and sea finds pride of place in my work.

My brushes help keep me well, and I continually seek out new opportunities to place a transforming piece with a private portfolio collector, celebrate regalia in oils, and connect to communities looking for wellness through art practice.

It’s more than materials and what can be seen, it’s presence and a guiding fluid energy that connects and celebrates all sentient life.
